From Abuse to Accolade: Kosum’s Story
Words by Marah Grant
With the fight against sex trafficking of young children, it’s easy to become bogged down in the negatives. The staggering numbers and horrific abuse are always at the forefront of our minds as we work to eradicate this terrific evil. The fortunate few who are rescued carry brilliant success stories. At Destiny Rescue we cannot help but stand up and cheer their amazing accomplishments especially in the face of such harsh adversity. It’s time to accentuate the positives and cheer for another fantastic success.
Kosum is a fun and friendly girl. In her school work and around her home she shows a lot of maturity and responsibility. Her self-motivation is an inspiration to the staff that works with her. She currently lives at one of our Destiny Rescue homes and feels grateful that she now lives within a safe and loving community. She has kept in very good health since joining Destiny Rescue and has noted that her physical, mental and spiritual health has greatly improved. Kosum is currently in grade 5 at school and is doing really well in her studies. She particularly enjoys physical education and English subjects and is excelling in these areas.
In her spare time, Kosum enjoys reading and has a special interest in music and learning the saxophone. She also loves playing rattan ball as well as joining in with activities and games with the other children and staff at Destiny Rescue.
Kosum recently won an award for a shadow play. Shadow play or shadow puppetry called “Nang Yai” is an ancient story telling performance that is part of the very rich Asian cultural heritage. Kosum performed in the Isan language and she was shown on Channel 3 of Thai TV. Because of her excellent performance and exceptional artistic expression she was able to meet the Thai Princess, Somdetpratep, who personally awarded Kosum with her prize. Kosum was overwhelmed with excitement to have won and was happy that she could represent her school so well with her performance.
In the face of huge numbers and seemingly insurmountable evil, one of the reasons we need to champion each success is because you never know when one success can grow exponentially. With rescue and rehabilitation one of the things Destiny Rescue really strives to do is to help girls dream again. To help them discover their own potential and chase a path of their own choosing. For Kosum that could be something truly amazing. Kosum dreams of opening up her own orphanage one day so she can help neglected children and love them in the same way that she is now loved.
What an amazing story it would be if the former trafficking victim and now award winning shadow puppetry performer were a future rescuer and nurturer. A new fighter in the battle against trafficking and abuse. For now we stand up and applaud Kosum on her accomplishments and we accentuate the positive.
