Make Your Intentions A Reality
It’s easy to become passionate about the fight against human trafficking. Human suffering can ignite an intense response within our hearts. Often though we feel at a loss in knowing how to help. Where do we even begin and what steps do we take if we really want to create change?
Asking “How can I help?” is the first step and it is an important one. The question indicates a desire and intent to join the fight against human trafficking and to make an impact in the lives of others. However, it’s important to move beyond intention into real and sustainable action.
The simplest step to create change is to spread the word. Although human trafficking occurs globally and sex trafficking affects nearly 21 million people worldwide, very few people are aware of the situation. Spreading the word that human trafficking exists helps build political pressure and momentum to make permanent changes to the way governments, communities, and law enforcement tackle human slavery.
If your desire and intent is to make a more direct impact, there are many options both for those who want to stay local and for those who like to travel. Participating in local fundraising events, organising community gatherings to raise awareness, or even manning an information booth at large venue events are just a few ways to be active locally. Those wishing to serve as an overseas worker, either in a support role such as performing administrative work or interactively with rescued youth as an aftercare manager, also have many great options to be part of the fight against modern slavery. There are many ways to connect your personal talents and resources with a way to directly impact this important cause.
Again, it’s easy to become passionate about a cause, especially one as abominable as child trafficking and exploitation. However, it’s the willingness and decided action to take the next step, to move beyond good intentions, which will result in true change and a new reality.
