Mai was excited. She just needed to complete a few more steps to land a dream job.
The 14-year-old Thai girl had been offered the opportunity to become an online product reviewer. She imagined gaining an online following by modelling the latest styles or posting unboxing videos. In addition to keeping the products she tested, she’d be paid for her work!
She thought everything was fine when the organisation that hired her asked for bikini pictures of her; they explained that it was just so they could send clothing that would fit her body type.
When someone arrived to pick her up for her first day of work, Mai was still excited to start her new job. But instead of taking her to an office, the driver took her to a hotel.
That’s when the nightmare began.
Mai was raped by a paying predator. The entire job offer had been a sham, meticulously designed to entrap and exploit hopeful children like Mai.
Armed with compromising photos of Mai, the traffickers blackmailed her into enduring more abuse. They told her that if she went to the police, they’d release the photos to her family members on Facebook.
Traffickers often manipulate their victims in this way, twisting young minds into believing that the abuse they suffer is somehow their fault.
Paralysed by shame and terrified by the criminals’ threats, Mai endured the abuse until she couldn’t take it anymore.
Frightened and desperate, Mai finally chose to report the crimes committed against her. The police brought in our rescue agents to help with her case.
Together, they arrested Mai’s trafficker and brought him to justice.
Mai is free now. With the help of kind caseworkers, she’s finding her way out of the web of fear that her trafficker once used to control her. “After receiving that help, I feel much better,” Mai said.
Thousands upon thousands more are suffering the way Mai once did. Your decision can bring the light of freedom to those children. Join Destiny Rescue today to change a life forever.
