Officers burst into the wealthy business executive’s home.

The Belgian man was accused of sexually abusing kids online, wiring human traffickers money to do unspeakable things to children in front of a camera.

As officers handcuffed the accused, they witnessed terrible confirmation of the paedophile’s crimes: an open laptop showed an 11-year-old girl suffering horrible sexual abuse.

But the police couldn’t help her: she was half a world away. Belgian authorities were able to discern that the exploitation was happening in the Philippines, but little else.

They gave their intel to Filipino investigators to try to find the suffering child. That’s when officers decided to bring in The Scientia Program (Scientia). Scientia is a cross-NGO initiative we’re a part of, manned by a team of investigators armed with cutting-edge technology.

One of Destiny Rescue’s own on the Scientia team, Caleb, quickly went undercover to impersonate a Western child predator.

Under the supervision of the Philippines’ National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), he developed a friendship with the trafficker online, pretending that he was a potential customer. The woman, whom we’ll call Bela, was eager to make some money off Caleb, and the way she planned to do it broke his heart:

Bela offered up her own daughter for live exploitation shows in front of a camera.

The girl was trapped in a remote rural location, groomed and exploited by the woman she should’ve been able to trust the most in the world.

Despite the pain and humiliation, it’s likely she didn’t even know that what she suffered wasn’t normal; to her, this was just another thing her mother required of her after school.

Her mom used her innocence for profit. Her father, the man who should’ve protected her, turned a blind eye because the money was too good and earned them the nicest home in their community. There was no escape, and she didn’t even know to try. She had no advocates, and no one was looking for her.

Except for the team with The Scientia Program.

Caleb carefully fostered the relationship to build trust with Bela and gather info for the case, all while deftly diverting her attempts to abuse her daughter for him.

The team was working tirelessly to match the online person with a real name and location, using open-source technology and powerful AI-enabled investigative tools. After just a few days, they had a name, an address and enough evidence to secure a warrant. It was time to rescue the child.

Caleb, a few Destiny Rescue agents and a van-full of NBI officers bumped along a dirt path toward their destination.

Caleb had just spoken with Bela on the phone, confirming that she was home. It was time to rescue her daughter and bring her to justice.

The trafficker’s house was easy to spot: a sturdy concrete building that stood out amongst the rest of the modest, thatched-roof homes in the area, and several men lounged on the front steps.

An NBI officer chambered a round in his rifle as they approached. Besides its reputation for suspicion toward outsiders, this region was a known hiding place for political insurgents.

With children involved, the disciplined officers would use their weapons only in the gravest circumstances, but they had to be ready for anything.

Officers threw open the van doors before the vehicles stopped, calmly but firmly forcing the men outside onto the ground as more officers rushed into the house.

As soon as the home was secured, Caleb went inside to aid the officers while other Destiny Rescue operatives comforted several children inside until caseworkers arrived to take them to safety. The abuser, Bela, was vehemently denying any wrongdoing until she saw Caleb.

Bela’s reaction to seeing him was surprising: instead of mentally withdrawing or lashing out in anger, the mother who had been exploiting her own daughter asked Caleb for help.

With Caleb’s arrival, all pretence of innocence faded away. She’d been offering her daughter to him on a video call minutes before, so there was no point in keeping up the facade.

The woman continued to plead with Caleb, kneeling before him and begging for forgiveness. She even clung to his arm and wept as her criminal charges were read.

In the end, Bela, her husband, and her brother-in-law were all arrested on child trafficking charges.

Meanwhile, officers searched the house, uncovering more and more evidence of the exploitation that had happened there.

A heartbreaking dichotomy emerged, revealing the horrible corruption of innocence in a family home: floral curtains and school awards existed alongside sexual exploitation paraphernalia. A pink, heart-shaped Barbie ring light that was likely used to create appalling videos. It was a gut-wrenching perversion of a home that bore the irreconcilable signs of a warm family and horrific sexual abuse.

The young victim of Bela’s exploitation was quiet during the raid. The sudden intrusion of big, armed men and her mother’s cries had shocked her and her siblings to silence as the raid progressed. Bela’s exploited daughter wouldn’t be her only victim this day; the other, younger children were having their worlds turned upside down as well.

Our agents were quick to comfort the confused kids: for young victims, the raid that rescues them can be one of the most traumatic moments of their lives. In a single loud, bewildering instant, their family dynamic—however warped—is forever changed as everything they’ve ever known comes crashing down.

The shocked children finally began to cry as they got into the vans.

By the time the kids were in the care of the government shelter, they’d relaxed enough to smile and play again.
